Yet if you read the recent debates on trigger warnings you would think that they banned all reading or intellectual engagement.
In an April 10 editorial, "Bogus Challenge to Cigarette Warnings," you say a federal appeals court in Washington should reverse a lower court ruling and hold that the Food and Drug Administration may require cigarette companies to display lurid images on the fronts and backs of cigarette packs and in ads.
Its finest quotes include warnings ("You are entering a world of pain"), exhortations ("Calm down, you're being very undude"), simple orders ("Shut the fuck up, Donny"), and alcohol-fuelled wisdom ("Sometimes you eat the bar and sometimes, well, the bar eats you").
At Tim Clark's academy, the uniform rules are as exacting as they are unapologetic: "All pupils will look immaculate in their uniform… failure to look smart at all times will result in automatic detention, isolation or being sent home – there will be no warnings, you know what is expected".
I say, 'Let's recap the warnings you've had, let's look at your performance'.
