The Met Office warned about potential structural damage – more likely across the north-west of the warning area – as well as disruption to power supplies and travel, with restrictions on bridges and disruption to ferries.
The storm warning area included Cameron Parish, which was devastated by Hurricane Rita in September 2005.
"Tropical storm conditions are expected to first reach the Florida west coast within the warning area later today, making outside preparations difficult or dangerous.
Grahame Madge, spokesman for the Met Office, said: "We are expecting gusts of around 80mph widespread within the amber warning area, up to 90mph in places.
The Department of Fire and Emergency Services has confirmed that Yarloop was not named in an emergency warning alert until half an hour before fire struck the town, but defended the omission saying the town was included in the boundary of the warning area.
Paul Gunderson, chief operational meteorologist, said in a statement to expect "wind gusts reaching 70 to 80 mph widely across the warning area with gusts of 90mph in exposed locations.
"Not everywhere within the warning area will see thunderstorms, and indeed some spells of warm sunshine are expected at times, but where thunderstorms do form, some torrential downpours are likely with frequent lightning, large hail and locally strong gusts.
According to this Contingency Plan, the tsunami influence region can be rated as follows: blue warning area for 0-1 m, yellow warning area for 1-2 m, orange warning area for 2-3 m and red warning area for above 3 m.
All areas with an observed seismic intensity of ≥5L were included in the warning area (see Fig. 5c), although the warning area in the IPF method was smaller than the final warning area in the current method (see Fig. 5a-2).
