Students entering the ninth grade applied for majors last spring by submitting essays about why they wanted to specialize in a particular field (the most popular was sports management).
"It's: 'What are you going to do there?' " Jericho High School, with 1,224 students, offered a handful of college courses in the past through Syracuse University, Adelphi University and Long Island University's C.W. Post campus for students who had finished the entire sequence in, say, math or a foreign language, or who wanted to specialize in business.
Nobody is denying the extent to which, within the confines of the trade, Glass and Blair screwed up; if they had wanted to specialize in fiction, they should have either written novels or, more lucratively, shipped over to England and worked for one of the tabloids, where the embellishing instinct is de rigueur.
