Using the cut-off values of the percentiles of the WC as proposed by the criteria of the Third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey NHANES IIII) [ 28], the participants were divided into the categories on the basis of their WC: below the 75th percentile (normal waist value), 75th– < 90th percentile (moderate), and ≥90th percentile (high waist value).
Obesity, as expressed with the BMI and waist circumference values represents another issue with the average values for our population being well above normal limits, particularly for the subset of women exceeding the age of 65 (30.8 ± 4.7 kg/m2 for those aged 65 79 years).
Girls in the present study had higher waist circumference values than British, Australian and Turkish girls, and lower values than Mexican girls in all age groups except lower values than Australian girls at 7-9 years.
Compared with other studies of Chinese children, both boys and girls in the present study have higher waist circumference values in all age groups however had similar values to 7-year-old children from Xinjiang Province.
Boys in the present study had higher waist circumference values than Australian, Turkish, and British boys, and lower values than Mexican boys aged 6-12 years, however were similar to British boys aged 6-7 years.
