Mr. Gettelfinger, who led several strikes over the last decade to try to slow the shift of jobs to lower-wage suppliers, considered a strike in 1999 over Ford's plan to spin off Visteon.

And the changes may force companies to pay suppliers before paying wages or honoring obligations to customers, like redeeming gift cards, said Sally Henry, a partner in the bankruptcy law practice at Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom and the author of several books on bankruptcy.
The dream, of course, is a supermarket that doesn't make us feel dirty; that gives staff a living wage and suppliers a sustainable business, one everybody can afford to shop at.
The care packages being offered to the old in their own homes are being whittled down to inhuman levels: two 10-minute visits a day by carers hired at rock bottom wages by suppliers who undercut all decent tenders.
"Companies do not pay company income tax on revenue – they pay it on profits after paying all expenses including wages, capital replacement, supplier costs, fleet costs and other operating expenses," she said.
"This department has led the way on the living wage, with our suppliers agreeing two years ago to pay the London living wage to their DWP cleaners and caterers working in London," the spokeswoman said.
The group's chief executive, Jennifer Westacott, said companies did not pay income tax on total income or revenue, but on their profits after paying all expenses including wages, capital replacement, supplier costs, fleet costs and other operating expenses.
H&M said: "We are willing to pay more so that the supplier can pay higher wages.
