Finally, to enable localization of the SN and VTA in the midbrain, a proton-density weighted image (TR/TE 6,000/16 ms, FA 149 deg, echo spacing 15.6 ms, 0.75 × 0.75 mm voxels in-plane) was acquired using the slice center and orientation information from the functional images (Oikawa, Sasaki, Tamakawa, Ehara, & Tohyama, 2002).
We scanned young-adult participants using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), utilizing imaging parameters targeted for the NAcc and VTA.
Regarding the firing rate in VTA neurons and their relation to λ, see Author response image 2, which demonstrates experimentally that avalanche dynamics are not affected in cortex-VTA co-cultures when the VTA or midbrain culture is acutely disconnected from the cortex.
