In the neurophysiological literature, the computations are often described in terms of extracting spectral (or textural) features of sounds vs temporal (or contour) features of sounds, with the underlying assumption that spectral features are essential for pitch and timbre percepts, and temporal features are essential for rhythm but also timbre as well.
