The volume of the areas were computed according to V = (n−1)∑(i = 1) (Ai+Ai+1)/2×di, where Ai is surface area in the i-th section, n is a number of sections, and di is distance between surface area Ai and Ai+1 ( = 40 µm) [64].
There was a tendency of a larger volume of the areas in male than in female brains (hOc3d and hOc4d), but due to the large variance the difference did not reach significance (P > 0.05, Fig. 7).
The interstitial collagen content was estimated as the volume fraction of the area occupied by fibrillar collagen and cardiac myocytes.
