By defocusing the objective lens, the contrast transfer function is altered and for high resolution studies it will need to be accurately assessed through the volume of single projection images, which is not trivial compared to single projection images.
Then for a domain, the modified volume equals the Euclidean volume of the projection of onto the hyperplane.
Subsequently, Schwegler and Lipp showed the existence of quantitative differences as well [ 10]: They measured the surface of the IIPMF in consecutive sections as a measure of the total volume of this projection.
