On the other hand, the intrinsic design objective for portable power generation devices is the energy density, i.e., the electrical energy generated from a given mass or volume of device and fuel cartridge.

As BI points out, these ads will appear in any apps that have been downloaded from Amazon's Appstore, on any Android device, but creating its own handset will give Amazon potentially a much bigger, guaranteed volume of devices that would help that network scale out.
On the back of IDC's claim that total shipments — the volume of devices sent to retailers to be sold on to consumers — dropped from 5.6 million in Q3 2015 to just 2.7 million in Q3 2016, Canalys argued that they actually rose 60percentt over the same period to reach 6.1 million shipments.
UPDATE: 9/27/13 mid-day: Fiksu reports today they believe this to be a glitch caused by the large volume of devices hitting Apple servers, which led Apple to turn off processes that were not mission critical, including app store updating processes.
While the volumes of devices shipping is projected to be far less than the levels of traditional, general purpose computing devices, by 2020 Gartner is expecting that a fifth of the total spend on all devices will be going towards these newer types of gizmos — so that's across the board spend, from VR to connected speakers to wearables.
