Virtually all of his research came to fulfillment in his major work, Die christliche Lehre von der Rechtfertigung und Versöhnung, which deals with the historical and biblical materials (vols. 1 2) and with Ritschl's own reconstruction (vol. 3).
From 1776 he gave a public course of chemical lectures at the Academy of Dijon, which were collected and published as the Eléments de chymie (3 vols., 1777 78; "Elements of Chemistry").
Lions's publications include Generalized Solutions of Hamilton-Jacobi Equations (1982), Stochastic Differential Systems, Stochastic Control Theory, and Applications (1988; coedited with Wendell Fleming), and Mathematical Topics in Fluid Mechanics (2 vols., 1996 98).
He compiled and edited the standard theological reference work Real-Encyklopädie für protestantische Theologie und Kirche (22 vols., 1854 68), which was published in an abridged English version as The New Schaff-Herzog Encyclopedia of Religious Knowledge (13 vol., 1951 54).
His writings include Wesen und Zweck der Politik, (3 vols., 1893; "The Character and Purpose of Politics"), Die sociologische Erkenntnis (1898; "Sociological Perception"), Positive Ethik (1901; "The Positive Ethic"), Die Kritik des Intellekts (1902; "Critique of the Intellect"), and Soziologie (1907; "Sociology").
Bacchelli's strongest works are historical novels, and his masterpiece, with the general title Il mulino del Po (1938 40; Eng. trans., vols. 1 and 2, The Mill on the Po, vol. 3, Nothing New Under the Sun), is among the finest Italian works of that genre.
Saving type at the price of obscurity, he identifies many key quotations by their page numbers in "CW," specified on page xi as "The Complete Works of Ralph Waldo Emerson, 12 vols., Ed.
