Planes were banned from flying within 6,000 ft of the volcano peak until the red alert changed to orange.
Camping is another option, albeit a chilly one with many of the villages above 2,700m, but the payoff is stunning sunrises and a chance to see mountain ranges span for kilometres, including the Orizaba volcano peak in the neighbouring state of Veracruz – Mexico's tallest mountain at 5,636m.
The area's isolation has allowed it to maintain a pristine ecology relatively untouched by human interaction, and the park hosts a biome ranging from alpine glaciers on the volcanoes' peaks to tropical forest on their flanks.
Contrary to legend, the flatness of Adams' current summit area is not due to the loss of the volcano's peak.
The volcano's peak was shrouded in thick fog, but Humboldt had nonetheless pressed on.
"Vesuvius has never defeated us," said Francesco Nappi, 26, of Somma Vesuviano, a red-zone town even closer to the volcano's peak than San Giuseppe Vesuviano is.
Rescue efforts resumed Sunday and rescuers found another body about three kilometers (two miles) from the volcano's peak, said Lt. Col. Asep Sukarna, who led the operation.

At a shelter in the Murray D Lincoln school in the city of Escuintla, about 10 miles (15km) from the volcano's peak, Alfonso Castillo said he and his extended family of 30 had lived on a shared plot in Los Lotes where each family had its own home.
Other highlights of the national park are Ka'ū Desert, a region of unusual lava formations in the rain shadow of Kilauea; Mauna Loa Trail, which wends its way to that volcano's peak from Kilauea; a tree fern forest, a dense tropical area watered by nearly 100 inches (2,500 mm) of rainfall annually; and the museum at the park headquarters.
