The only unfamiliar aspect of our stimuli was that the specific words had no visual frequency in hiragana.
Since lexical frequency correlates heavily with both the visual form frequency of a word as well as lower level frequency, such as bi- and trigram frequency, frequency should have a relatively early effect for the typically presented katakana stimuli, possibly already at the M100.
The oddball and debut illusions involve distortions in duration judgments but do not affect perceived auditory pitch or high visual flicker frequencies.
To examine whether the causal inference model can account for the full range of cue combination observed in human multisensory perception, we make use of both the auditory and the visual response frequencies we measured in our experiment (Fig. 2c).
For short durations, recent findings indicate that the extraction of temporal cues such as visual temporal frequency is spatially confined [29], [32], [33], [56], [57].
Our data, however, demonstrate that perceived durations can dilate with no effect on auditory pitch or visual flicker frequency (Figure 2).
Thus, such mechanism may be the ideal candidate to balance the relative weights of adaptive and off-components dependent on visual input frequency.
The SFI could just as easily be calculated using other tests of visual function (frequency doubling perimetry, short wavelength perimetry, etc).
