In the early stages of cataract development, some visual improvement can usually be obtained with eyeglasses, but, as the cataract progresses, the visual deterioration becomes sufficiently severe to warrant surgical treatment.
Visual improvement was defined as halving of the visual angle and visual deterioration as doubling of the visual angle.
Treatment is often challenging but usually unwarranted unless there is visual deterioration caused by exudative or neovascular complications.
The cause of visual deterioration was long-standing inoperable retinal detachment, epiretinal membrane formation, secondary glaucoma, chronic macular edema, and optic atrophy.
