The study, which profiled more than 300 family members impacted by incarceration, shows how court fees, visitation expenses and the cost of basic necessities like food all contribute to a steep decline in the well-being of families trying to support loved ones.
In all, researchers interviewed more than 1,000 former inmates and family members in 14 states and found that court fees and fines, phone and visitation expenses, and commissary costs frequently sink families deep into poverty.
"We have no information that ties any reaction to various fees to a reduction in visitation," Jeremy Handel, senior director of communications, said in an email.
"That's with visitation, commissary, phone calls, books, leftover bills, attorney fees.
Barrett also provides, for a fee, services such as pre-ceremony gown storage, with visitation rights included: on busy weekend afternoons, the Bridal Mall looks like a petting zoo, filled with brides-to-be and their friends and relatives, all cooing over the tulle.
The document cited "irreconcilable differences, with David seeking full custody of their unborn twins, visitation for Jurica and denial of spousal support, and asking Jurica to pay legal fees related to the split.
"A $25 visitation fee helps to ensure our prisons remain safe environments for staff, inmates and visitors".
