Praising one of the acknowledged heroes of the contemporary Right is one thing, but recalling his white supremacist origins reminded the country of the foundational violence of that Right.
But the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, brought the cruel violence of terrorism right into the gut of ordinary Americans -- and terrorism, not Iraq, remains the great fear of the moment.
