The questions assessed limitations in vigorous and moderate individual activities, lifting and carrying, bending, kneeling and stooping, walking, climbing stairs, bathing and dressing.
Although most older people can perform spirometry adequately, 8 some patients may be unable to perform this test (eg, patients with cognitive impairment, with limitations to vigorous respiratory efforts, sedation).
Furthermore, they were more likely to report cough on most days for three consecutive months or during the past year (9.8 % vs. 1.9 %), limitations for vigorous physical activity (55.3 % vs. 34.1 %), COPD (1.7 % vs. 0.13 %), and congestive heart failure (1.8%% vs 0.25%%).
In the pair of responses that showed the greatest inconsistency (3.7%), respondents claimed both severe limitation of activities such as bathing or dressing and no limitation of vigorous activities.
In contrast, other health-related quality of life outcome measures (e.g., SF-36) include items explicitly addressing aspects of functioning and disability as defined by the ICF (e.g., feeling depressed or anxious, pain, limitation in vigorous activities) [ 30].
