It was the absence of major development — in contrast to the spate of high-rise buildings that have gone up in the more genteel blocks below 96th Street — that seemed to lull this usually vigilant community.
The shooting prompted increased patrols and more vigilant community organizing that many credit with reducing crime.
"However, we remain vigilant to community concerns and continue to work with our partner agencies to ensure the location remains a safe place to visit".
He notes that India has a stronger tradition of private enterprise, more developed managerial education, better corporate governance, a freer flow of information, a more vigilant investment community, and stronger banking and legal institutions.
"The more vigilant the community is the better it is for everybody," Wyton said.
Between work, constant vigilant concern, community, personal projects, a patchy internet connection to the outside world, and a little booze, somehow people make it through year after year.

Isolation of cases, infection-control measures in hospitals, and vigilant surveillance at community and population levels are imperative.
"It's a community issue and we just have to get vigilant to keep our communities safe.
In times of recession we have to be particularly vigilant about relations between communities, and a club of Liverpool's stature should never risk giving the slightest encouragement to racism.
