Many electronics manufacturers make in-dash video units with retractable screens.
Car manufacturers started offering back-seat video screens in 1999, and according to the Consumer Electronics Association, more than 400,000 "mobile video units" were installed last year.
"Most of the major cable companies are generating strong cash flows, but the growth rates of the video units is slowing," said Matthew Harrigan, an analyst at the investment firm Janco Partners.
"You have to have something under the Christmas tree, " said Peter Moore, president and chief operating officer of Sega of America, which is shifting its $149 Dreamcast video units from container ships to air freighters to fill what it describes as soaring demand from retailers frantic to stock up on alternatives to Playstation.
It's also buying in-banner video units, featuring the Super Bowl ad.
