Images were collected with TVIPS TemCam-F415 4k × 4k CCD-camera (Tietz Video and Image Processing Systems GmbH, Gauting, Germany) using a nominal magnification of × 60,000.
Measurement was performed using the drop shape analysis system (DSA 100, Krüss GmbH, Germany) by video documentation of the fall down of a water drop (3 µl volume, 40 µl s−1 rate) on the bacterial-covered filter surface The contact angle θ between water/bacterial surface/air was measured by image analysis with the DSA software using the circle fitting mode.
VTP was conducted on the stage of a zoom upright macroscope (Olympus SZX-RFL2, Japan) equipped with still (AxioCam HRc, Carl Zeiss, GmbH Germany) and video (Mintron 12V1-EX CCD, Taiwan) cameras.
We used a sensitive CMOS based detector (Tietz Video and Image Processing Systems GmbH), previously shown to be beneficial for electron diffraction studies (Tani et al., 2009) and modified our data collection procedure.

In addition, the microscope has a 50/50 double viewpoint tube, which accommodates a CCD video camera (ColorView IIIu, Soft Imaging System GmbH) and an optical fibre mount.
After the end of presentation, we continuously observed the subject's behaviour in the box for another 3 min. The behaviour was recorded by an overhead video camera and video-tracking software ('Viewer 2', Biobserve GmbH, Bonn, Germany) to calculate the time spent in each chamber.
For histomorphometrical measurements, images were obtained using a light microscope (BX50, Olympus, Hamburg, Germany) at a magnification of 100×, associated with a video camera (SIS Color View3, Soft imaging System GmbH, Münster, Germany).
