Tumours may also use alternative ways to obtain blood supply: Vessel co-option, the use of pre-existing vessels, was first described in the brain, but could also take place in other tumours (Leenders et al, 2002).

Although potential vessel co-option is observed in many malignancies (Table 2), not surprisingly, vessel co-option seems to be most frequently observed in highly vascularized tissue such as brain, lung, and liver, the former two being well oxygenated, the latter with high nutrient load.
