It forms the highest band on the shore above Fucus spiralis and is very desiccation-tolerant, surviving for more than 7 days out of water [ 15], when it can lose up to 96% of its water content [ 16].
They occurred in pools with very different desiccation patterns, although occupation lengths decreased as desiccation risk rose.
The two species with very low desiccation survival also had the lowest proportion of foreign genes (Fig. 1), equating to a significant, negative relationship between desiccation survival and the proportion of HGT (phylogenetic least squares regression, t = −7.74, P = 0.016).
We did, however, also find some very large and desiccation resistant pools that never contained a Daphnia population in 25 years of observation (Fig. 1d & 5).
