Halliday and Matthiessen (2014) discuss three minor process types, namely verbal, behavioural and existential processes.
In the SM model, there are six process categories: material, mental, relational, verbal, behavioural and existential.
The wealth of criteria provided to differentiate the primary processes (Mental, Material and Relational) is not matched in the classification of the subsidiary processes (Verbal, Behavioural, Existential), as they are seen as intermittent categories that encompass the meaning of numerous principal processes (Halliday, 1994:138, Thompson, 1996).
Compared to existing instruments for observing non-technical skills, 3 15 30 the EPOC is distinctive as it quantifies general verbal behaviours rather than appraising context-specific behavioural markers that require clinical expertise.

From the standpoint of an interpreter, there can be alternative translation manuals or schemes that are consistent with the total set of a speaker's verbal and other behavioural dispositions.
This is modelled representationally by the transitivity system, which is "that part of grammar which constitutes a theory of 'goings-on'" (ibid).. Categorisation of the six processes types (Material, Mental, Relational, Verbal, Existential and Behavioural) is based upon the experiential structure of the clause (the syntax and semantics of the elements, specifically the process and participants).
That is, there is a clear crossover of semantic criteria in the SM, with communicative verbs assigned to any one of three categories (i.e. verbal, relational and behavioural categories), resulting in a lack of consistency; meanwhile, the CG model fails to capture a sufficient level of detail through placing communication verbs within the mental cognition category.
