The metabolic costs of remaining in warm surface waters during the day, rather than cooler deep waters, can be estimated using the observed temperature differential between surface and deep waters in the Gulf Stream, and published values for routine metabolic rate and Q10 in sharks (with Q10 being the factor by which metabolic rate increases for every 10°C increase in temperature).
