In our unpublished experience on 131 patients followed up for squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck, the 40 recurrences appeared bright on b-1000 images, the mean ADC value of recurrences was comparable with that of primary tumors (0.97 × 10−3 mm /s vs 0.89 × 10−3 mm /s, p = ns); conversely, mature scar lesions invariably appeared dark as background normal tissues on b1000 images (Fig. 3).
Overexpression of cyclin D1 was not prognostic value for recurrence of survival in a consecutive series of 248 operable breast cancer patients (stage I and II).
This association could have negatively influenced the prognostic value of the recurrence score in this cohort, as proliferation markers are dominant denominators in the algorithm that determines the recurrence score.
We finally assessed the association between the standard uptake value (SUV-max) of PET and apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) value of local recurrence and lymph node metastases.
The value of the Recurrence Score in reducing the cost of cytotoxic chemotherapy (let alone the prevention of toxicity in patients not needing the treatment) has been well-recorded, but even this to date has not been sufficient to have the test recommended by health authorities in the UK or in many other parts of the western world.
The negative predictive value for recurrence of AF was 69.8%.
MRM showed 90% sensitivity, 91.6% specificity, 56.3% positive predictive value and 98.7% negative predictive value for detection of recurrence on the surgical scar.
Similarly to the EORTC method, each of these variables received a risk scoring value, patients were categorised according to this value, and probabilities of recurrence and progression were given as previously described (Fernandez-Gomez et al, 2009).
This is the most extensive study to date in the United States to demonstrate that BRAF mutation is of no predictive value for recurrence or survival in PTC.
By reanalyzing existent microarray expression data sets, Chodosh and colleagues [ 1] also show that Snail expression could have predictive value for recurrence in subsets of primary human breast cancers.
