Its share of global manufacturing value added and manufacturing exports are 1.1percentand1.3percentcent respectively, half of which is from South Africa.
Value added to manufacturing production and CO2 emissions are considered to be the proxies for desirable (y) and undesirable (b) outputs, whereas capital (x1), labor wages (x2), and raw materials (x3) are considered as inputs.
In their conclusions, the authors document that, in general, lower tariffs lead to higher value added in manufacturing through higher imports of inputs in the production process that were nonexistent in the domestic market, or were more expensive than in the international market.

Real value added in manufacturing, the most precise measure of its contribution to the economy, has grown by more than two thirds since its heyday in 1979, when manufacturing employed almost 20 million Americans — eight million more than today.
The chemical industry in the UK, which employs 180,000 people and represents about 12% of value added in manufacturing, is likely to be similarly affected.
In China, where the gauge has been rising faster than in the United States, the value added by manufacturing was about $1.9 trillion last year, according to government and private estimates.
Its gross national product (GNP), GNP per capita, and value added from manufacturing are also among the highest in the region.
In 1914, the U.S. Census writes that the value of Chicago's industrial output is 1.48 billion dollars (or 30 billion in current dollars); the value added by manufacturing was 581 billion dollars (or about 12 billion dollars today).
