We have tested the efficacy of DNA immunization as a single vaccination modality for rhesus macaques followed by highly pathogenic SIVmac251 challenge.
A Cox regression analysis, which considered patient age, presence of DM, initial serum albumin levels, seroconversion after HBV vaccination, dialysis modality, and gender, showed that advanced age and malnutrition were associated with increased mortality (P = 0.035 and P = 0.032, respectively) (Table 2).
Therefore, the combination of DC-based vaccination with traditional modalities may offer promise for novel GBM treatments [ 3].
The time to elimination, dependent on initial vaccine efficacy, is considered in Figure 3, for those transmission settings and delivery modalities (mass vaccination at 95% coverage) where elimination was achieved within 20 years.
Although a few phase I trials and one phase III trial have indicated a possible benefit from vaccine therapy in an adjuvant setting, vaccination remains an experimental modality of cancer treatment [ 19].
Although prophylaxis against B16 implantation can be achieved by many types of vaccines, eradication of B16 tumors after tumor implantation can only be accomplished by the combination of vaccination with other treatment modalities [34].
A further option is to combine vaccination with other therapeutic modalities, as recently illustrated in acute promyelocytic leukaemia (Padua et al, 2003).
Recently, it was shown that the modality of vaccination with a tumor-specific antigen influences the differentiation pathway of the anti-vaccine CD8 T cells, which may have an effect on their capacity to trigger a tumor rejection response [ 14].
Finally, we discuss the various recommendations and modalities for HBV vaccination, preemptive treatment, and patient management, according to the level of risk and to the circumstances in which reactivation occurs.
We also suggest that individualized treatment modalities and preventive vaccination should be further explored.
