The ion Bernstein wave (IBW) experiment on the Frascati Tokamak upgrade (FTU) is aimed at heating the plasma bulk ions by utilising the mode-conversion of lower hybrid (LH) waves coupled by two waveguides' antennas.
The change in the mass, achieved with focused ion beam (FIB) milling, of one of a pair of electrostatically-coupled microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) resonators has been detected utilising the mode-localisation effect.

The predictive methodology, which was based on a fracture mechanics approach, utilised the mixed mode fatigue delamination behaviour of the materials and finite element analysis of the laminates for evaluation of the strain energy release rate.
The procedure incorporates the dynamic stiffness matrix of a composite Timoshenko beam and then uses generalised coordinates by utilising the normal modes, so that the overall response of the beam is computed by the superposition of all individual responses in each mode.
