We coded the question: "How did your research experience influence your thinking about future career and graduate school plans?" We first developed codes for this item on a separate data set of 834 students from the BIO-REU program in 2012; we then used the same coding rubric on the data set of 762 valid responses from 2013.
The coding rubric was used to quantify the presence or absence of these seven key concepts in each of the students' three essay questions (see above).
