The term 'prediabetic' is used in our paper because the target population of Study 1 was identified using a risk prediction algorithm that explicitly seeks to identify men and women who are in the prediabetic blood glucose or HbA1c ranges and who are at elevated risk of rapid glycaemic deterioration (see Methods).
