He said he has told local organizations that anyone using "Downtown Bronx" can forget about Congressional appropriations.
"We will do everything within our power to ensure that we recover what is owed to the taxpayers and put it to use downtown, where there are still many unmeet needs," said Avi Schick, chairman of the development corporation.
The program was to bring in third- and seventh-grade students from all over the city for two-week "residencies" using downtown sites like the Brooklyn Bridge to explore the fabric of the city.
A spokesman said the company would establish a temporary corporate headquarters, probably in another building it uses downtown, until it knows if and when it can return to its building.
Yet another major action blockbuster appears set to use downtown Chicago as its backdrop, according to entertainment industry sources.
Among the lessons "London can learn from New York's successes," according to the study, is the redevelopment approach used in downtown Manhattan, which has involved rezoning and other policies to stimulate both commercial rejuvenation and residential development.
But the city has experimented with many more styles than that: the five-globe Llewellyn (first appearance circa nineteen-hundred, and still used decoratively downtown), the Westwood Special (blue-and-gold tile at the base), the Wilshire Special (topped with a seven-and-a-half-foot lantern and made from solid bronze), the Broadway Rose, to name a few.
"This is perfect for Livingston," said Brian M. Stolar, who is chief executive of Pinnacle Communities, a company that is creating mixed-use downtown redevelopment projects in Montclair, Hoboken, and Morristown.
The proposal is meant to preserve a balance of uses downtown, he said, adding, "We don't want to discourage banks, but we do have enough now".
"The real challenge is to produce a fine-grained mixed-use downtown," said Jürgen Bruns-Berentelg, chief of HafenCity Hamburg, the city agency that is building and managing the project.
