Symptoms and signs, as well as physical and psychosocial complaints, need to be considered early, through use of objective scar assessment scales and possibly tools, to elucidate the most significant factors.
For large-scale prospective studies, use of objective measures of physical activity, such as accelerometers and calorimetry, are impractical and questionnaires have become the method of choice for the assessment of physical activity [ 1- 4].
Use of objective physical activity assessment.
The most notable contribution is the use of simple objective tests or scales that are not dependent on the patient's ability for verbal expression to assess the presumed cornerstones of delirium (i.e. altered level of consciousness, inattention, rapid onset and fluctuating course).
The mean NSHD values presented by category of clothes size and other ordinal variables can be used in the interpretation of these relationships on a more objective scale.
Furthermore, Juni et al. discouraged the use of individual scales as absolute and objective measures of trial quality and noted "relevant methodological aspects should be identified, ideally a priori, and assessed individually" [ 10, 18].
The ability of patients to report pain using the three pain scales supports previous observation that pain assessment involves an estimation of pain intensity according to pre-determined objective criteria such as the use of pain scales [ 30].
We would therefore recommend the use objective indicators for criteria such as "cognitive impairment" or "final phase" in future studies (e.g. use of the Karnofsky scale).
Use of the scales in clinical studies and determination of the relationship between subjective breathlessness and objective physical stimuli is warranted.
