The loss of IGC between 1998 and 2008 occurred especially within the quechua (−45%) – often seen as the uppermost zone for cereal cultivation – and the suni (−16%) transitional zone.
The uppermost zone has a characteristic dark colour, making for a striking profile and giving clear evidence of the decomposition of grass roots and of the wet-dry cycles over millennia that are essential to the formation of these soils.
The uppermost diagram of Fig. 6 displays a prominent low in the relative paleointensity proxy at the directional change zone of the M B boundary (indicated by a shaded bar).
