A month after announcing a planned $500 million for upgrading its science and engineering programs (Science, 28 January, p. 579), Yale University said last week that it will pour another half-billion into renovations and new construction on its medical school campus over the next 10 years.

The university has begun to try to upgrade its science offerings in recent years.
"We built a new athletic center, made a 30,000-square-foot addition and dining hall for our K-6 building, and built a new pre-K building, and renovated and upgraded the science labs throughout the school," said Mr. Nelson, who said that the school was not planning to increase enrollment.
President Obama also said he is challenging states to dramatically improve student achievements in math and science by raising standards, modernizing science labs, upgrading curriculum, and forging partnerships to improve the use of science and technology in classrooms.

Representative Mitchell, who also sits on the House Science and Technology Committee, says the new GI Bill supports the goal of upgrading the country's science and technology skills.
