Mohammed Amin, who has owned a pharmacy in Peekskill for 30 years, is renovating a 135-year-old three-story building downtown — applying for a $35,000 grant from the city to upgrade the building's facade and $60,000 in state funds for the lofts.
The first phase of improvements, expected to begin in June 2002, will involve renovating the existing building on 165th Street and the Grand Concourse to make the glass facade more inviting and to upgrade the interior.
An additional loan for $230,000 from the Department of Housing Preservation and Development was used to steam-clean and repoint the brick facade, repair masonry, install a new sidewalk and elevator, upgrade the boiler and spruce up the lobby.
The company plans to spend about $1 million at 430 West 14th Street, to repair the brick facade, improve the heating and air-conditioning and to upgrade the elevators and lobby.
Alternatively, upgrade the windows.
In England, buildings on the National Heritage List must undergo a lengthy approval process to upgrade windows, facade or the inside.
Other renovation efforts, Mr. DiCapua said, included installing hundreds of storefront windows, putting in new electrical wiring, reshaping and upgrading the building's original brick facade and ensuring that the building could accommodate broad-band technology.
Besides upgrading the 16,000 square feet of storefront spaces and doing facade work, Westbrook is renovating the lobby and overhauling the elevators and mechanical and electrical services, said Frank Marino, a spokesman for Westbrook.
