This Could Be the Night and Until They Sail (both 1957) starred Jean Simmons in a comedy and a drama, respectively.
Her other notable films included Until They Sail (with Paul Newman), The Big Country (Gregory Peck), This Earth Is Mine (Rock Hudson), All the Way Home (Robert Preston), Mister Buddwing (James Garner) and Rough Night in Jericho (Dean Martin).
Instead, she was indifferent in Hollywood films by directors who should have made better – The Emperor Waltz (Billy Wilder, 1948), Born to Be Bad Nicholas Rayy, 1950), Serenade (Anthony Mann, 1956), Beyond a Reasonable Doubt (Fritz Lang, 1956) and Until They Sail (Robert Wise, 1957).
Ms. Simmons had somewhat better luck, starring with Paul Newman in "Until They Sail" (1957), a melodrama about New Zealand women who fell in love with American soldiers during World War II, and "Home Before Dark" (1958), as a woman whose husband commits her to a mental hospital.
At the same time, Anderson was writing screenplays - Until They Sail (1957), about four sisters in New Zealand during the second world war, and The Sand Pebbles (1966) on US gunboat diplomacy in 1920s China, both for director Robert Wise, and Fred Zinnemann's The Nun's Story (1959), Oscar-nominated for his screenplay.
When one considers that she was barely past 25 in 1955, it is all the stranger that her films slipped so far in quality: Hilda Crane; as secretary to gangster Paul Douglas in This Could Be the Night; with Paul Newman in Until They Sail; with Gregory Peck and Charlton Heston in the big western, The Big Country; This Earth is Mine.
Her screen debut, aged 14, was in Until They Sail (1957), followed by the title role in Vincente Minnelli's The Reluctant Debutante (1958), based on the West End hit by William Douglas Home, in which the very American Dee played the very English Rex Harrison's daughter.
They remained on the island until 22 December, when they sailed for Egypt.
The troops disembarked and it was not until 11 October that they sailed again.
First, they travelled to Öland and stayed there until 21 June, when they sailed to Visby in Gotland.
