Sub-optimal levels of hippocampal activity are commonly attributed to unsuccessful memory formation, whereas the supra-optimal levels of hippocampal activity related to unsuccessful memory formation have been rarely studied.

To further investigate whether the correlation patterns identified in a main effect of memory-related region (hippocampus and PHC) were observed in the unsuccessful encoding of IWS memories (i.e., IO memories), we compared hippocampal-related correlations with PHC-related correlations in the same ROIs during IO.
