Lufthansa has cut off-peak fares on unrestricted, economy-class tickets in Germany up to 63percentt.
This week, American Airlines, for example, offers 26 different fares between New York and California that range from $198 for an economy round-trip ticket purchased in advance and requiring a Saturday night stopover, to $1,470 for an unrestricted first-class round-trip ticket.
That's about 50% more than an unrestricted first-class airline ticket.
But with no salary cap this year, coupled with a weak unrestricted free-agent class and the top eight teams being hamstrung by rules that limit their ability to sign free agents, the door has opened on major player deals.
The effect on the smaller unrestricted free-agent class is likely to be seen next week, when second-tier free agents -- the capable but unspectacular players who can still contribute but who usually have to wait until the second week of free agency to be seriously pursued -- are signed.
The class of unrestricted free agents available is unremarkable, including Justin Armour and Billy Davis from Baltimore, and Leslie Sheppard from Cleveland.
Beyond them, the Jets' class of unrestricted free agents is not compelling, including defensive lineman Anthony Pleasant, the special teams player Dwight Stone and offensive lineman Siupeli Malamala.
For example, the number of miles needed to obtain a relatively unrestricted ticket in coach class for travel within the United States or Canada, known as an anytime ticket, will increase to 50,000 from 40,000.
