For people long trained to view career development as progressing up a prescribed set of rungs such as those climbed by their professors, and to believe that single-minded focus on scientific work is the way to get there, Levine's insistence that career advancement lies in cultivating the unexpected and unpredictable opportunities that arise from human connections may seem disorienting.
