In preclinical models, mechanical unloading of muscles results in oxidative stress, imbalances in protein synthesis/degradation, and cell death [ 8], pathological responses that may be compounded by systemic inflammation, infection, hypercortisolemia, and malnutrition [ 9].
It is believed to result in quadriceps weakness due to mechanical unloading of the muscle and due to muscle wasting [ 17, 53] and it was shown to be associated with impaired muscle endurance [ 54].
