As the college counselor at St . Pauls School, I applaud Yale and Stanford for deciding not to require students accepted through early applications to attend the universities (news article, Nov. 7).
Not only do they fail to push ideas, such as EITC expansion, that are known to work; but they have also avoided intellectually tougher debates, such as how to revamp health-care or counter the rising elitism of the universities (see article).
Faculty members protected by tenure kept their jobs, but mathematicians who had not yet attained it found themselves facing sharply heightened competition, which produced an "unprecedented 12percentt unemployment rate for new American mathematics PhDs" and "a dramatic decrease in the probability of obtaining a position in research universities," the article says.

After his family fled Saddam Hussein's Iraq in 1992, Sweden offered the ten-year-old a fresh start: a home, citizenship and an education that qualified him to enrol in a British university (see article).
At the time of the bridge's erection, Atorod Azizinamini, chair of FIU's civil and environmental engineering department, said the project was "an outstanding example of the ABC method" in a university news article that described the bridge as the "first of its kind".
"They were calling this 'modernization of the universities,' but different articles of this law were very dangerous for us," he said.
