Mean baseline patient characteristics for the early RA and late RA groups were similar, including age (51 versus 53 years), HAQ (1.5 versus 1.6 units), tender joint count (31 versus 32), swollen joint count (24 versus 26), CRP concentration (3.3 versus 4.4 mg/dl), and presence of rheumatoid factor (87% versus 81%); those with early disease had been treated with fewer DMARDs (0.5 versus 3.3) [ 30].
