The largest union of nurses in New York City is voicing dismay that contracts at four large hospitals expired weeks ago without a new agreement being reached.
"Things are kind of slow," said Tina Bordas, a licensed vocational nurse who represents the nurses at Hollywood Presbyterian through SEIU Local121RN, a union of nurses.
But rather than roll over, the union of nurses, technicians and other hospital workers has rejected management's proposal, instead launching a counter attack on the executives themselves.
"It's a convenient argument for the industry to validate their underresourcing of registered nurses on the floor, simply saying there's a nursing shortage, but there isn't," said Michelle Mahon, nursing practice representative and organizer with National Nurses United, the largest labor union of registered nurses in the US.
The union of school nurses accepted last year's policy decision eagerly.
But the nursing staff, the essential heart of any hospital, is still feeling stress, according to several physicians and a union of registered nurses affiliated with the Pennsylvania State Education Association.
National Nurses United, the largest union of registered nurses in the United States, has said that most hospitals are still not prepared to properly deal with Ebola.
The largest union of registered nurses in the country will begin a $200,000 advertising campaign on Monday aimed at defeating Sharron Angle, the Republican challenger to Senator Harry Reid of Nevada, the majority leader.
"Anecdotally, from our members working in hospitals, [rescinding DACA] would have a direct effect on the many support services that people depend on for patient care," said Fernando Losada, the national collective bargaining director for National Nurses United, the largest union of registered nurses in the country.
Friday's protest was organized by National Nurses United, the largest labor union of registered nurses in the country, and it was clearly buoyed by the presence of Netroots Nation, the annual progressive confab that's taking place at the city's convention center this weekend.
