"The situation is calmer today, but people are still uneasy," said Moctar Mariko, president of the Malian Human Rights Association.
His biracial background may have reassured voters who might otherwise have felt uneasy, said Gov. James E. Doyle of Wisconsin, a white Democrat.
"When you put Jersey barriers in, it proclaims the need for them, which makes people uneasy," said Norman L. Koonce, executive vice president of the American Institute of Architects.
"This has been a labor of love, but for the moment I'm uneasy," said Dr. Sarnoff, a dermatologist who shares offices with Dr. Gotkin, a cosmetic surgeon, in Greenvale, south of Glen Cove, and in Manhattan.
"I wanted to write a play about blackness, and theatrical forms about the history of blackness, and as a writer I pushed myself to explore ideas and images that made me uneasy," said Mr. Jacobs-Jenkins, who studied anthropology at Princeton University and received a master's degree in performance studies at New York University.
"When people hear terms like leak, tritium, and groundwater, and when you put those words together in a single sentence, the normal person is going to get uneasy," said Ralph Andersen, senior director for radiation safety and environmental protection at the Nuclear Energy Institute, the industry's trade association.
"I'm uneasy," says Lisa Eland.
"In a certain sense I'm more uneasy," says Alan White, a philosophy professor whose reviews are mixed.
Any connotation of religious or paranormal beliefs makes many scientists uneasy, says Chris French, a psychologist at Goldsmiths, University of London, who studies anomalous experiences including altered states of consciousness.
He sought her counsel during meetings; it made aides and colleagues uneasy, several said, because she seemed to feel awkward about it, and sometimes had little to say.
"It left me uneasy," he said.
