'underwood' is a correct and usable word in written English.
It refers to a dense growth of small trees or bushes that grow beneath the canopy of larger trees in a forest or woodland. Example: "As we walked along the forest trail, we could see glimpses of the sunlight shining through the underwood, creating a beautiful dappled effect on the forest floor."
