Women's dress from 1840 onward was dominated by a boned corset and framework underskirt.
Named after the materials from which it was originally made (Latin: crinis, "[horse] hair"; linum, "thread"), this petticoat was, like its predecessors the farthingale and the hoop, a heavy underskirt reinforced by circular hoops, in this case of whalebone.
