An important question to ask is whether there are conditions under which the two processes are equally likely, and whether this would produce a different outcome.
In those religious systems we know about, there seem to be two processes under way.
But under some conditions, the two processes interact, as when selective attention is solicited, and/or when a link is established between consecutive stimuli.
To look closer at the similarity of expression patterns between the ribosomal and ATP synthase genes, we compared the expression of genes belonging to these two processes under several perturbations (Fig. 5).
Under normal circumstances the two processes will occur simultaneously, and if organic resorption is hindered, the osteoclasts will not be able to dig as deep into the bone as under normal bone resorption [ 42, 52], which will lead to the observed decrease in inorganic resorption.
Spatial dependence between points of two types occurs when events of each type are either closer (clustering) or farther away (inhibition) than expected under the assumption that the two processes are independent.
Bone turnover is mediated by activated osteoclasts, which degrade the established bone matrix, and osteoblasts, which form new bone matrix, two processes that, under normal circumstances, are tightly coupled and balanced [ 77].
Furthermore, DSB formation seems to be timed independently from DNA replication, as it did not occur significantly earlier in cdc6-mn replication-depleted or checkpoint mutants cells, suggesting the order and timing of the two processes are under independent cell cycle controls.
The accelerated re-structuring was driven by two processes: (i) mortality under the new conditions; and (ii) recruitment by taxa ("invasion") belonging to the local species pool of the target site but previously not present in the introduced community.
The outcome of these two processes is predicted under simplified equilibrium models and pure-drift models.
