Childhood suffuses Grossman's work: he has written several books for kids, and a play about three-year-olds; among his novels, the main narrator of "See Under: Love," Momik, is nine years old, and Aron, the protagonist of "The Book of Intimate Grammar" (1991), is a twelve-year-old boy whose body has stopped growing.
And yet, although for many years I had wanted to write about the Shoah, it was those two sentences, this devastating sample of Nazi syntax and world view — "I have killed your Jew," "All right, now I will go and kill your Jew" — which were the final push, the electric shock that ignited the writing of my novel "See Under: Love".
The book is also an unusually tactile piece of writing, filled with physical description, characteristic of much of Mr. Grossman's work, including seven other novels ("See Under: Love" and "The Smile of the Lamb" among them) and four works of nonfiction ("The Yellow Wind," about the Israeli occupation of the West Bank, being the best known).
