"The problem of poor, white British under-attainment is real and the gap between those children and their better-off classmates starts in their earliest school years and widens as they get older," said Graham Stuart, chair of the committee.
Partners in Learning is part of the wider Black Pupils' Achievement Programme (BPAP), a government-funded project in which 25 local authorities have addressed the problem of educational under-attainment among African Caribbean pupils.
In Scotland's Future, it said: "The solution to ill-health is not in the hands of the NHS alone – it depends on breaking the cycle of poverty, educational under-attainment, worklessness, poor mental wellbeing, and, through these, preventable ill-health".
There seems therefore no doubt that the under-attainment of NW students applying to university, be it for medicine or in general, is part of a broader pattern of under-attainment throughout pre-school education, compulsory and post-compulsory education, perhaps exaggerated at A level by greater educational aspirations in NW students.
Adjusting for confounding variables is important, as previous studies report an association between depression and alcohol use, cannabis use [ 25– 27], traumatic events (e.g. sexual abuse) [ 16], low perceived family support [ 28], a low level of maternal education [ 29], and under-attainment at school [ 12].
