The building of this pan-African Great Green Wall (GGW) was approved by an international summit this week in the former German capital Bonn, a side event of the joint conference of the committees on science and technology and for the review of the implementation of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD).
The move reportedly makes Canada the only nation in the world not party to United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification, or Unccd.
In addition, the wall would provide energy resources; fruit, vegetables and other foodstuffs; support local economic development; and even political stability in the whole region, said Daniel André, of the UNCCD.
Desertification is low on many countries' radar – illustrated by Canada's recent withdrawal from the UNCCD – but its links to climate change and food security are starting to resonate with governments and business, particularly given fears over the world's ability to feed a soaring population.
In China over 400 million people are affected by soil erosion, causing annual economic losses of US$10 billion, while the UNCCD says Indian reports of degradation have increased "by a factor of six".
The UNCCD hopes to adopt a 'Zero Net Land Degradation by 2030′ resolution at its 2013 Conference of the Parties in Namibia later this year, and there are signs sustainable land management could form one of the Sustainable Development Goals set to be announced in 2015.
As much as 2bn hectares of arable land could be rehabilitated and used for agricultural production, according to Louise Baker, coordinator of external relations at the UNCCD.
In Africa alone a UNCCD expert panel estimates 4-124-12%aGDPcultural GDP is lost due to deteriorating environmental conditions, contributing to the high levels of chronic hunger and conflict on the continent.
